Bridging Continents Through Empowerment: Reflections from the Micro Financing Africa Gala

Last night, I had the privilege of attending the MicroFinancing Africa Gala—an inspiring and heartfelt evening dedicated to raising funds for microloans in rural Africa. This annual event goes far beyond fundraising; it’s a celebration of resilience, innovation, and the power of community-led transformation.

The evening featured a vibrant marketplace showcasing goods made by the very entrepreneurs the organization supports, a thrilling live auction (including a safari trip!), and a silent auction—where, I must add, the father of my children was a bit bummed he didn’t win the bourbon whiskey. But hey, he’ll live—haha.

This wasn’t my first time attending the gala or engaging with the organization. Last year, through my work with the ACAFE Project and the African Chamber of Commerce St. Louis, I had the honor of presenting to a group of women brought over by the organization from Africa. That experience left a lasting impression on me.

What sets this organization apart is its unwavering commitment to sustainability and dignity. They live by the principle of “teaching people to fish,” not just handing them one. This wisdom—earned through years of grassroots experience—is changing lives across Africa, especially for women. Through access to microloans, people are building businesses, supporting families, and uplifting entire communities.

As someone deeply passionate about Africa’s development, I was moved by the stories shared and the spirit of unity in the room. The organization's partnerships—with African leaders in the microloan groups they support, and with the African community right here in St. Louis—show the strength of a growing network committed to long-term, meaningful impact.

Special thanks to our table sponsor, Tapiwa Mupereki of JewelRide— who is also a board member whose entrepreneurial journey and commitment to community are truly inspiring. Leaders like Tapiwa remind us what’s possible when opportunity meets determination.

The growing connection between Africa and St. Louis is more than symbolic—it’s a beacon of hope. Events like this gala, the V4A Annual Gala, the African Chamber of Commerce Gala, African Diasapora Council and others are building bridges and nurturing real relationships between our communities.

Huge kudos to the MPA executive team and board—your dedication is not only commendable, it’s critical to advancing economic empowerment in Africa.

Another powerful moment for me was when three friends of mine were chatting after the event the board chair Mark Schaeffer joined our little cycle to expressed his gratitude and he said:

“You can’t talk about impacting a marginalized group without involving them.”His deep gratitude to the African community for showing up and participating was incredibly moving.

Looking ahead, for those eager to take meaningful action, don’t miss the historic trade mission to Kigali, Rwanda this October, organized by the World Trade Center St. Louis. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect with one of Africa’s most promising emerging markets.

And if adventure is calling, explore the upcoming St. Louis–Senegal Sister City trips and the African safari experiences curated by my dear friend Annie of Unlock Africa Travel. These journeys aren’t just vacations—they're immersive, eye-opening experiences that showcase the beauty, culture, and potential of the continent.

Let’s keep showing up. Let’s keep investing, connecting, and believing in the power of people. Together, we can build a future where prosperity is shared, inclusive, and sustainable.
